We all know we’re blessed with a ‘world class’ chazzan and many of our regular and occasional congregants enjoy listening to Moshe Haschel’s repertoire on the Shabbat morning’s or Haggim they spend with us.
The Honorary Officers have asked him to put some of his cantorial knowledge down on paper so we can understand a little better his talent and perhaps get an historical perspective of from where his music has come.
You will find attached the first in an occasional service. Today Moshe is telling us about Adon Olam – who wrote the prayer and when, an idea of tunes to which it’s sung and some ideas of the wide range of renditions. Can I heartily recommend you this one.
There will be explanations of more prayers and tunes to come in future months. If there’s a particular version you might like to know about, please write to Jennifer and she’ll pass it on. In the meantime, should you wish to hear Moshe ‘live’ you know where to find him on a Shabbat morning!
