Three years ago, our Synagogue had the vision to establish a unique service for its older members, over the age of 75, to help them deal with problems and the fear of loneliness that can sometimes come with old age. Our Director of Senior Care and Activities, Yaffa Amit, combines a degree in Psychology and Human Behaviour, diplomas in counselling and experience as a Minister's wife (amongst other places in Kenya!) with a deep appreciation of Yiddishkeit.
Thanks to Yaffa's programme older members are now more aware of the services and benefits that are available from local authorities and central government and how to deal with the necessary bureaucracy involved. Yaffa advises and guides members, and liaises with Social Services, Jewish Care, Hospitals and Care Agencies in complete confidentiality and with great sensitivity. Yaffa also co-ordinates with families to ensure the welfare of their older relatives.
At Rosh Hashanah and Purim, parcels are sent to those in Hospital and to our many members over the age of ninety. She organises teas and parties marking Jewish Festivals, the Luncheon Club, shopping expeditions, hospital and home visits, and transport to Cemeteries. A bereavement support group is run with the help of Susan Kosky, an experienced counsellor.
Yaffa's army of dedicated volunteers (new volunteers would be very welcome) enables frequent one-to-one contact with the hundreds of our members and to make them deservedly feel a valued member of our community. Yaffa can be contacted by e-mail at Yaffa@shulinthewood.com or by phone on 020 7286 9810.
